KRABI IN THE MAY

inute decision to go on this trip to a slow paced and quiet island in Thailand. The initial plan was to get my hands on the motorised sports found in the area, however, as I was not involved in the itinerary planning, I was informed that krabi only has non-motorised sports a few days before the trip. But it was still a trip which I didn’t regret going.

Accommodation
It was a place with beautiful seaside sceneries and clear beaches. It had both (non-motorised) water sports and land sports.  The accommodation for the trip isnt an issue as there are many resorts available for rental in Krabi. However, to actually get a good resort with a nice ambience and service, it would actually be great if you booked early. I was hoping for a terrace resort where we had a pantry and privacy all to ourselves but we booked too late hence, all of the terrace types are fully booked.

The Airplane ride
The trip from Singapore to Krabi took about 2 hours. We flew by tiger air and the experience was relatively good. I actually have issues with taking airplanes as there is always this nauseating smell in the plane cabins. Sometimes he smell can extend from the airport all the way to the plane cabins and the destination airport. For short haul flights I usually try to force myself to sleep through the flight journey or blast my ipod to keep myself distracted from the smell if I can’t fall asleep. This is because most of the travel medications are causes drowsiness it really gets to me when I am tired but unable to fall asleep hence, I would try to avoid taking the medications.

Upon landing,
As usual it takes relatively long for people to clear out from the airplane cabin and into the immigration area where we get our passport checked and chopped. There are really few counters open when we arrived and the queue was really long. A whole flight’s worth of passengers was queuing up in front of 3-4 counters. It was quite a long wait probably about 15-20 minutes. As we didn’t get airport transfer from the hotel, we booked a taxi from the airport to our hotel. It was relatively affordable and you can actually hagger to lower the prices as well. These land tours offers transfers from out hotel to the places of attractions. As for communications, there are booths right outside the immigration counter where most people would crowd to get their sim cards for 3G usage. There is a 3 day and 5 day plan available. I didn’t get one as we were only staying for 4 days.

On our way to the hotel
I’m not sure if it is a way to get commissions but the taxi driver stopped us half way in a travel agency to check out the land tour available in Krabi. I would have categorised it as dangerous to leave the taxi, but since we were travelling as a group, we went ahead to check out the activities we could explore in the area. It was actually a fruitful visit, as we managed to get all of our activities covered through one agency. We also managed to get quite a good bargain since we were travelling as a group. The trick to getting a great price was to reject the offer and suggest leaving for the price you feel was too high despite it being lowered. It usually works in helping to lower the price quite a bit more.

Accommodation
The resort we booked was Red Ginger Chic hotel. Despite its name, it was actually a cosy and nice hotel. It had the basic facilities such as a gym, swimming pool and a breakfast area. The place had a really Asian resort feel with all the cloths and the decorations. I was a little shocked at how the lobby was right at the door though. We had 2 rooms on the second floor near where the breakfast buffet was held. I regret not choosing the rooms in level 1. This was because the rooms in level 1 had a mini private pool attached to the main pool. This would mean that we would be able to enter the pool right at our doorstep! How cool is that!

As for location wise, the place was rather convenient if you are willing to walk. It was about a 10 minutes’ walk to the main streets.
